Game Boy Cartridge Battery Replacement

Over time, the battery inside of a Game Boy cartridge will die out, causing the loss of data and the inability to hold a save. This can happen with any game, but it is a particular problem for GSC cartridges, as the real-time clock is a major drain on the batteries.Luckily, Game Boy batteries can be replaced. If you know how to use a soldering iron, you can replace the batteries yourself. Otherwise, you can take your games to a local video game shop to have them replaced for a fee.Expert Battery Replacement: I recommend Game Trader in Madison for this service, as the price is good and the turnaround time is quick. My Red and Silver versions now play perfectly after being dead for over 20 years!Home Battery Replacement: If you have the proper tools and expertise, you can replace Game Boy batteries at home yourself. You will need a "Game Bit" screwdriver to open your cartridge and soldering tools to remove the old battery and secure the new one. This guide on YouTube explains the process in detail.CAUTION! Do not attempt to replace a Game Boy cartridge battery without the proper tools and skills! You can permanently damage your game if you don't know what you are doing. You may also encounter solder-free methods of replacing the battery, such as by using razors and electrical tape. While these methods can work, you still risk seriously damaging your game if something goes wrong. If in doubt, take it to an expert.
